The Critical Need for Specialized Foot Wound Care

Foot wounds (ulcers), especially diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), are complex medical issues that require immediate, professional attention. Due to underlying neuropathy and poor blood flow, these wounds often fail to heal, leading to deep infection and the high risk of amputation. Our priority at Foot Centers of Maryland is swift, effective healing.

Causes of Chronic Foot Wounds

Wounds on the feet typically arise from a combination of the following factors:

  • Neuropathy (Diabetic): Lack of sensation prevents the patient from detecting and relieving abnormal pressure or trauma.
  • Pressure: Constant, unrelieved pressure on a bony prominence leading to tissue breakdown.
  • Vascular Disease: Poor circulation prevents oxygen and immune cells from reaching the wound site, halting the healing process.
  • Edema (Swelling): Swelling from conditions like venous insufficiency can compromise the skin.

Comprehensive Wound Management Protocol

Our specialized program focuses on four pillars of wound healing, available at the Mercy Office:

  • Debridement: Safely and aggressively removing all non-viable (dead) tissue from the wound to promote healthy, granular tissue growth.
  • Infection Control: Managing bacterial load through targeted antibiotics based on wound cultures.
  • Off-loading: The most critical step. Utilizing devices like Total Contact Casts (TCCs), boots, and custom orthotics to completely remove pressure from the wound site.
  • Advanced Dressings: Using biological and synthetic wound coverings that promote rapid healing.

Prevention and Long-Term Protection

Once a wound is healed, intensive preventative measures are essential to avoid recurrence, coordinated by our staff at the Reisterstown Office:

  • Therapeutic Footwear: Prescribing custom protective footwear and inserts designed to permanently off-load the previous ulcer site.
  • Patient Education: Empowering the patient with knowledge of daily foot inspection and when to seek immediate care.
