What are Plantar Warts?
Plantar warts (Verrucae) are small growths that appear on the soles or toes of the feet, caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Warts on the sole of the foot are often pressed inward by the pressure of standing and walking, causing them to flatten and become painful.
Request an AppointmentCauses and Symptoms
Warts are transmitted through direct or indirect contact, especially in public spaces:
- Causes: Direct contact with the HPV, often in warm, moist environments like pool decks, locker rooms, and communal showers.
- Pain: Warts are typically painful when squeezed from side-to-side (a key diagnostic test).
- Appearance: They appear as rough, grainy growths, sometimes with a center that resembles small, dark pinpoints (clotted blood vessels).
- Location: Most common on the ball of the foot, the heel, or pressure points.
Treatment Options for Eradication
Treatment must aim to destroy the infected tissue or trigger an immune response, discussed at our Lutherville Office:
- Topical Therapy: Application of prescription-strength acids to slowly destroy the infected tissue layers.
- Cryotherapy: Freezing the wart using liquid nitrogen to cause tissue destruction.
- Surgical Excision: Removing the wart under local anesthesia, usually reserved for large or resistant warts.
- Swift Microwave Therapy: (See separate page) An advanced, fast, non-invasive option that uses heat to stimulate the immune system to attack the virus.
Importance of Professional Treatment
Over-the-counter treatments are often weak and ineffective. Professional care at Foot Centers of Maryland ensures the treatment is deep enough to eradicate the stubborn virus, reducing the risk of spread and recurrence.
